Feng shui Facing directions of a home or office help to determine the quality of light and air arriving and eventually circulating though your space. In feng shui the facing direction is quite a controversial subject and many feng shui consultants have difficulty in discovering this simple phenomenon. I say feng shui consultants as most people can tell you where the front of their home is. Even when the door is on the side of their home or office, they are fully cognisant of this fact, and if only the feng shui consultants asked the occupants they could save themselves a lot of perplexity and frustration. The problem with feng shui facing directions is that there are sometimes other deciding factors that can change a facing direction and these are as follows.
Mountain / water facing directionFeng shui facing directions are used to determine the quality of energy arriving at a building. In the case of Mountain water if the front of a home is blocked by a hill, mountain, huge tree, large wall or some other obstruction then clearly any light is blocked from entering the site.
This is similar to the Mountain / water arrangement and refers to the lay of the land. In general buildings are erected to face into a valley and have a hill behind them and a slope away from the front of the site. If it was the other way around then water could enter the home and in extreme case could wash the building away.
Natural beauty can change the facing directionDeveloping the topography model further, houses are also usually built to face onto natural beauty spots such as a park or a river. These are extremely auspicious features and allow the builders to charge a premium for such property. To determine if you have one of these in your home, imagine an estate agent showing prospective buyers around your home, what would he say about your facing direction?
Building use can change the facing directionIn feng shui the facing direction is considered as the most active or yang side of a building. The opposite direction, known as the sitting direction is always the quietest or yin side.
The facing direction refers to the front wall of a house and is the energy arriving at a home or office. Notice that we do not say within the building but “arriving at”, that’s because there is a clear distinction between arriving at, and the energy within the building.
In feng shui the opposite direction to the facing direction is known as the sitting direction, or sitting position and this always tells feng shui consultants the energy within a home. This is the most important aspect in any feng shui consultation and as the sitting direction is directly opposite the facing direction that is +/- 180 º degrees, it can only be found after determining this direction.
Although feng shui consultants maybe somewhat confused as to what constitutes a facing direction, clients can equally confuse their own facing direction. This is mainly because they are unaware that the fixed point they are using, namely the Sun, actually varies its rising from northeast to southeast during the course of a year. The Sun only rises due east at the spring and autumnal equinoxes. Conversely, most clients say that their home faces ???? direction because the Sun comes up in this other direction.
For the best results from any feng shui consultation we need the actual compass bearing as this allows us to work in precise terms down to a fraction of a degree if needed.
